Senior Scientist - Strain Engineering

Permanent employee, Full-time · Berlin

What we do
Today, materials production accounts for 23% of GHG emissions and shows no sign of slowing down. Cambrium was founded with the belief that biology offers a better way. For material innovation in nature, biology turns to proteins. Over the past 4.3 billion years evolution has shaped proteins with every material property imaginable. From surfactants and hard surfaces, to gels and foams, to coatings and adhesives. We built our platform to speed up biology’s innovation cycle to make the materials the world needs in a timeline that matters. By programming proteins at scale, we create sustainable breakthrough materials for innovators across cosmetics, fashion and packaging.

We are an equal-opportunity employer and value diversity. We consider all applications equally regardless of race, color, ancestry, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, age, citizenship, marital status, disability, or gender identity. We strongly encourage individuals from groups traditionally underrepresented in tech to apply, and we can help with immigration.
Your role
We are looking for a Senior Strain Engineer with 3-5 years experience developing and scaling microbial strains in an industrial context. You will supervise a team with expertise in genetic engineering of yeast host systems and protein overexpression.

What you can expect to do:

  • Build and manage a strain library that scales for overexpression of different innovative protein-based materials
  • Generate novel genetic tools for proprietary library
  • Define, test and standardise workflows for improving productivity of novel proteins
  • Manage strain engineering projects: experimental design, SOP implementation, high throughput strain screening
  • Perform lab work including strain transformation, genetic engineering, small-scale culturing and strain screening
  • Align business goals and timelines with strain engineering resource allocation
Your profile

You’ll be a great candidate if you:

  • Are a transformative manager with a pragmatic mentorship approach
  • Navigate scientific project management and strategy with ease
  • Are an analytical communicator: rely on data and facts to explain and make decisions
  • Are excited by technical solutions to the problems with the material world
  • You have experience scaling startups, teams or scientific groups

Your skills:

  • 3-5 years industrial experience developing yeast host systems for protein overexpression (experience working with Pichia pastoris is a plus)
  • Experienced in leading a scientific team
  • Deep knowledge of high-throughput techniques for screening of strain variants
  • Experience with next-generation sequencing is a plus
  • Understanding of both computational biology and machine learning methodologies is a plus
  • Proficient in the use of ELNs (Electric Lab Notebooks) is favourable
What we offer
In addition to a competitive salary, you can expect the following:
  • Employee Stock Options
  • Urban Sports Club Membership
  • Lunch subsidy
